Center Stage: Nancy Mathieson

Nancy Mathieson is a Policy Circle Illinois State Leadership Council Co-Chair and serves on the Council’s Expansion Committee. She is also Co-Leader for the Vernon Area Policy Circle in the greater Chicago area and is a Precinct Committeewoman in Illinois. Please meet Nancy!

What do you do and what do your day-to-day activities look like?

I am a co-Chair of The Policy Circle State Leadership Council in Illinois. Our mission is to expand the number of Circles, enhance the experience of Circle Leaders and Circle Members and, in addition, help women better engage in their communities and civic life. I am also an elected Precinct Committeewoman in Illinois, work on local, state and national elections, and participate as Communications Director for a local political organization.

What do you hope to gain from being part of The Policy Circle Community as a Connector?

I hope to bring more women into The Policy Circle community, to help them grow personally and use their talents to better our communities and our country.

Where do you currently live?

Lake Forest, Illinois

What does public policy leadership mean to you?

Everyone has something to give and a talent to offer. We all have life experiences and learning we can share with others.

Can you think of an example where civic engagement led to a change in public policy?

The media can be a powerful tool if used correctly. I once contacted a major city newspaper about a high density building proposed on beachfront land originally slated for green space. I spoke to a reporter, and several days later the newspaper gave full page coverage to this issue. Shortly after, the building proposal was shut down and the land now includes green space and an active dog park.

Describe a moment when you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone.

The job of Precinct Committeewoman involves door-to-door canvassing to people’s homes, promoting candidates. While canvassing can feel intrusive, I always tell myself there is a greater goal in mind. I also remind myself no one is videoing me doing it!

What does your morning routine look like?

I am a early riser and enjoy silence with a cup of coffee. My husband and I have flexible schedules so each day is different. We both work with several non-profit groups, have calls and meetings. I try to go to the gym in the morning once or twice a week.

What are your essential travel items?

I-pad, i-pod for music, walking shoes for walking/hiking, sunscreen, athletic gear, books to read on the plane.

How do you unwind?

I love live music events and Chicago is a treasure trove. I follow my favorite artists and festivals and can’t wait every year when they publish their performing schedules. I also like to walk outdoors. We frequently travel to Scottsdale, Arizona which has the most beautiful and interesting scenery to enjoy while walking and hiking.

What are your current hobbies?

Our two adult sons live in Los Angeles, CA and Seattle, WA so we travel to see them frequently. I follow news and thought leaders on Twitter to stay current. I enjoy reading books and getting together with friends. I also like to dance!
