Is anything online really private?

Headlines
have abounded recently about online privacy, ranging from unauthorized sharing of data with third parties to ill-conceived posts made years ago that have resurfaced to get people fired.  What you write lives on, especially if done in a public forum.

our personal information is of great interest to companies so they can sell you more stuff.  Facebook just asked banks for information so they can better know your profile and offer more services.  Some consumers find this helpful while others find it troubling

Data breaches at major companies in the past, such as Target and Home Depot, and more recently at Facebook, also have revealed that your data is not necessarily safe nor private.  Any time you use a credit card or log in to a site with Facebook, LinkedIn or any other social media platform, your information is captured in a database and can either be tracked or in the worst case stolen.

While the internet and social media has ushered in an exciting new world of connectivity and convenience, it is not without risk.

The Policy Circle chose to create a private members-only website because women deserve a safe forum where they can share and exchange information with other women interested in doing the same.  They need a place for the free exchange of ideas, rational debate, and above all respectful dialogue on the issues. This all happens on the members-only platform where you can access Policy Briefs, see upcoming events for your circle and post information you want to share with other members.

It would have been easy — and cheaper — to use Facebook or another online platform, but The Policy Circle would have lost control of its privacy policy and been at the mercy of someone else’s. Privacy is too important to outsource it to another organization so The Policy Circle chose to invest in a members-only site and would do it again.

The Policy Circle will never sell your information.  All members sign a pledge to keep data private and not use for personal or professional purposes.  The Policy Circle online platform is a place to pause, learn and connect so you are prepared to lead discussions within your circle and other spheres of influence.  Having a place to hone your voice — in person and online — has never been more needed.

It’s a movement!
