Washington Wants YOUR Input: Federal Government Reform Initiative

As part of his promise to reorganize the federal government and reduce the size of the governmental workforce, President Trump tasked the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) “to submit a comprehensive plan to reorganize Executive Branch departments and agencies.”    On April 12, 2017,  OMB released its guidance memo for executive departments and agencies, “Comprehensive Plan for Reforming the Federal Government and Reducing the Federal Civilian Workforce”.   The memo instructs all departments and agencies to provide to OMB, by June 30, 2017,  “a high-level draft of their Agency Reform Plan that includes the areas the agency is developing for their reforms; progress on near-term workforce reduction actions; and a plan to maximize employee performance.”  The goal is to lay the groundwork for  “a less intrusive,  leaner, more effective, more accountable government.”

In the memo, OMB Director Mick Mulvaney noted that:

“When implemented, these reform efforts should accomplish the following objectives:

  • Create a lean, accountable, more efficient government that works for the American people;
  • Focus the Federal government on effectively and efficiently delivering those programs that are the highest needs to citizens and where there is a unique Federal role rather than assuming current programs are optimally designed or even needed;
  • Align the Federal workforce to meet the needs of today and the future rather than the requirements of the past; and
  • Strengthen agencies by removing barriers that hinder front-line employees from delivering results.”

At the same time departments and agencies are developing their plans, the President has invited the American people to directly submit ideas and comments they may have for eliminating or reforming certain cabinet departments or agencies, reducing boards or commissions, streamlining programs or other management or procurement reforms .

This is a unique opportunity for citizens to make their voices heard and participate in an historic opportunity to reform our government and make it more efficient.
