The Soaring National Debt: What Does it Mean for Me?

The United States debt is now at its highest level since 1950, approaching $20 trillion, and is on a path to possibly double over the next three decades according to the Congressional Budget Office.  What does that mean for you?  Should you be concerned?

If the debt were divided equally among every individual in the United States, the “per capita financial burden of the national debt comes to around $61,550 per person.” (Heartland Institute).  And as the The Policy Circle post “What You Need to Know About the National Debt,”points out, the nearly $20 trillion figure does not include unfunded liabilities:  Social Security, Medicare (which has expanded rapidly under Obamacare) and Medicaid.

Who does this affect?  Millennials are set to shoulder an unprecedented level of debt in the years to come.

The good news, according to the Manhattan Institute, is that “the American public has a newfound concern about mounting federal debt—nearly 8 in 10 Americans agree that the national debt should be among Washington’s top three priorities—and some members of Congress are starting to respond to public pressure.”

It is hard to be fiscally responsible.  In our personal lives, it means being restrained (I will eat at home or make my own coffee), being patient (save and create a get-away fund), and focusing on the priorities that have the most impact (that’s where it gets complicated in our personal lives and for our elected officials).  How do we agree on priorities?  That may be the topic of another post.   Circles will be discussing Taxes and Fiscal Responsibility. #CircleUp #mindofmyown.

It’s a movement!

Recommend a Circle Leader. Especially in Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri where circles are sprouting.

Start a Circle in your neighborhood. Add value in your community by giving women the facts and the space to strengthen their understanding of the issues.

Invest in The Policy Circle. Together let’s build a network of women who want to assume their civic duties and understand the impact of policy in their lives.

The Policy Circle is a 501(c)3 that provides a fact-based, nonpartisan framework that inspires women living in the same community to connect, learn about and discuss public policies that impact their lives.  Women across the nation are taking a leadership role in public policy dialogue on what human creativity can accomplish in a free market economy.
