The Policy Circle will share a one-on-one conversation with plaintiff, Mark Janus and Pat Hughes of the Liberty Justice Center and legal team. Participants in this Conversation Call will have a unique opportunity to hear directly from the plaintiff and the implications of the Supreme Court decision and share in a piece of history. So register for the call and bring your questions!
Mark Janus is a child support specialist for the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, a union position. Janus’s case argued that required “fair share” union dues are in violation of his first amendment rights. A previous Supreme Court ruling in 1977 asserts that employees must pay fair share union dues but that the collected funds may not be allocated to political activities, such as supporting candidates. Janus is in opposition to many of the positions taken by his union and asserts that the agenda of the AFCSME is at its core a political one.
Patrick Hughes is president of the Liberty Justice Center. Practicing law since 1994, Hughes and his team of constitutional lawyers focus on cases to assure economic liberty, the First Amendment and other constitutional rights in federal and state courts.
